RALEIGH – A Raleigh mom welcomed a son at 12:40 a.m. New Years Day. Michael was the first baby born at WakeMed in 2010.

Other new year's baby

• A baby girl born at Womack Army Medical Center on Fort Bragg beat Michael into the world. She was born at 12:05 a.m.
• UNC Hospitals welcomed a boy at 12:50 a.m.
• At Duke, a girl was born at 2 a.m.
• A boy was born at Rex Hospital just after 5 a.m. New Year’s Day.

"You're a little superstar,” new mother Felicia Robinson said as she cradled her 6 pound 1 ounce son Friday.

She said she couldn't believe it when the nurses told her little Michael Tirado was the first baby born in Raleigh in the new year.

"I was like, 'Are you serious?' I didn't know that would be a big deal,” Robinson said.

Michael was a new year’s surprise for Robinson.

"He wasn't supposed to be here until the eighth,” she said.

But she's an experienced mom. Baby Michael already has two brothers and a sister anxious to welcome their little brother to the world.

"Before I go home, he'll meet everybody,” she said.

Robinson said it's not new for her family to have birthdays on holidays. Two of her children were born on Thanksgiving.

"Weird, but normal. They'll want extra gifts as they get older,” she said.

For now, mother and baby are resting – ready for a new year, a new decade and a new life.
