CHARLOTTE – The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating a landing that caused substantial damage to a plane at Charlotte/Douglas International Airport.

No one was injured, but the wing of an American Airlines jet was scraped and the plane partially veered off the runway while landing Sunday night.

The 110-passenger plane came in at about 10:45 p.m. Sunday from Dallas. There was poor visibility in Charlotte and now investigators are considering if that was a factor in this incident.

The model MD-80 had a lot of damage to the right wing. Airport officials say the FAA did not tell them about the incident until almost 2:30 a.m. Monday, about three hours after the incident occurred.

Airport crews cleaned up scattered debris in the grassy area next to the runway. Officials from the FAA were also on the scene inspecting the equipment. The flight data and cockpit voice recorder have been sent to the NTSB in Washington, D.C., where they are conducting the investigation.

The agency expects to have a preliminary report within the next 10 days, but the final results of the investigation could take a year.
