GASTONIA, N.C. -- Gaston County District Attorney Locke Bell presented the case against a triple murder suspect to a grand jury Monday.
Danny Hembree, 47, is charged with killing 17-year old Heather Catterton, 30-year old Randi Saldana and 30-year old Deborah Ratchford. Catterton and Saldana's bodies were found just miles apart from one another in South Carolina earlier this year, and Ratchford's body was found in a cemetery in 1992.
James Swanson, 41, is also charged in Ratchford’s death. Police won't say how she was killed, but did say she suffered multiple cuts to her chest and neck.
Ratchford's mother, Lessie Muskelly released a statement saying, “(Hembree) didn't have to do that but I'd like to know why he did. I'm glad they finally caught him. He deserves what's coming to him because he took a good child."
Muskelly and her niece want the men accused of killing Ratchford to receive the death penalty, a punishment Bell is expected to seek.
"I really can't get into the facts that would support the death penalty because Mr. Hembree is presumed innocent at this point, just like any citizen in America," Bell said.
Bell says the details will come out if and when Hembree's case goes to trial. As for Swanson, Bell is still reviewing the evidence before moving forward.
Hembree will face a death penalty hearing in January.
