CHARLOTTE – After losing to the Miami Dolphins, Carolina Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith opened up about his hit off the field.
Just hours before Thursday night’s game, Smith was driving his 2009 Maserati on Colony Road in Charlotte. According to the police report, Smith told police he mistook Colony Road for a two-lane roadway, coming alongside a Jeep driven by John Dancoff. The report said the Jeep then swung out into Smith’s lane.
“He kind of looked at me and said, ‘You want to call the cops?’ I was like, ‘Yeah!’” Smith said.
Bob Buckner lives on Colony Road and sees this happen often, He said a bike lane was installed years ago to narrow the road and cut down on speed, but drivers sometimes get confused.
“People come out of the legitimate lane and want to make a right turn. They're not really looking for somebody else to be in that bike lane except a bike,” Buckner said.
Smith said police arrived quickly and both cars were drivable, giving Smith time to get to the game.
“I was just thankful nothing really happened bad. And nothing happened bad to him. But I feel bad for his insurance,” Smith said.
According to the police report, the accident caused $10,000 in damage to Smith’s car. The other driver suffered $2,000 in damage to his Jeep.
