Friday President Obama announced a compromise on the federal mandate requiring employers, even religious organizations, to provide contraceptives to workers who want them. The president of Belmont Abbey College is calling President Barack Obama's contraceptive compromise disingenuous and fake. Dr. Bill Theirfelder said the college will continue to move forward with its lawsuit. During a press conference Friday, Obama said his new plan will make insurance companies responsible for providing contraceptive coverage and not religious organizations.

Thirty-four new Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officers graduated from the academy on Friday – and one of them is the result of a recruitment trip to Puerto Rico last year. Although CMPD admitted the trip didn't have the results they were hoping for, they're still happy to add a 16-year law enforcement veteran to the force. The new officers were just sworn in and are ready to patrol the streets of Charlotte. Among them is Luis Lopez. Lopez is the direct result of a recruiting trip CMPD took to Puerto Rico last May.

A state transportation official told News 14 Carolina the fire on Bus No. 295 started in an electrical compartment just left of the driver's seat. It happened Wednesday afternoon in south Charlotte. All six students on board and the bus driver were able to make it out safely. The dramatic video of the bus fire made international news.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have named a suspect in Monday's shooting at Northlake Mall. Officers signed warrants for Carlton Ardrey, 25, on several charges including assault with a deadly weapon and possession of firearm by felon. Police say Ardrey shot Greg Tillery Monday as he walked to his car near Dick's Sporting Goods and Dillards.

Former state Sen. R.C. Soles is recuperating after undergoing open heart surgery Friday morning. A spokesperson from his law office said Soles he went through the surgery fine. He was admitted to New Hanover Regional Medical Center after learning he had two blockages.

The full Board of Governors voted Friday to approve a tuition hike for the 17 campuses in the UNC system. The committee approved the increase Thursday. The measure means in-state undergrads will pay nearly $500 more next year.
