DURHAM - Duke is one of five hospitals across the country and the only one in North Carolina chosen to share in a four-year, $200 million grant to train advanced nurses.
Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius and Gov. Bev. Perdue were at Duke Monday, announcing the hospital will receive $10 million a year for the next four years to train advanced nurses who can serve as primary care providers.
“These will be folks who will be in community health centers delivering primary care often to people who don't have regular access to healthcare providers,” Sebelius said.
The recipients of the grant include:
• Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, Pa.)
• Duke University Hospital
• Scottsdale Healthcare Medical Center (Scottsdale, Arizona)
• Rush University Medical Center (Chicago, Ill.)
• Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center Hospital (Houston, Texas)
Gov. Perdue touted the experience the members of the community have to offer.
“These wonderfully trained men and women will be able to actually become hands on the ground, if you will, to keep people out of the hospital and to provide better care,” said Perdue.
Sebelius noted the grant is part of the Affordable Care Act, what some Republicans refer to as “Obamacare.” If the new health care law is repealed, the grant funding would disappear.
“It is worrisome. I think that unfortunately, the talks about repealing the law often don't mention what would replace the law. How would we have primary care providers to deal with all the citizens here in North Carolina who don't have access to a doctor or nurse practitioner on a regular basis. Who is going to take the place of that and who is going to come up with the funds to do it,” said Sebelius.
Sebelius also commented on the cost of training physicians in clinical settings such as Duke, which is why the facility can be beneficial.
“This is not something that can be replicated in a classroom,” said Sebelius.
Duke Medicine estimates it costs about $49,000 a year to train one nurse practitioner.
