Doctors say that when bitten by a dog, find out if the animal is up-to-date with its rabies shots. If the animal is not, you may need a tetanus shot.

After being bitten, first try to wash with soap and water, then apply antibiotic ointment. If the skin is broken or if there is a deep puncture wound, medical attention may be needed.

According to a new study, vitamin D can help lower the risk of bone fracture, but a high dose is needed to be effective.

The research in The New England Journal of Medicine re-analyzed 11 clinical trials of more than 31,000 people older than 64.

The study showed taking less than the recommended 800 international unites of vitamin D a day had no affect on bone-fracture risk, but when the participants took more than 800-units, the risk of hip fractures lowered by 30-percent and the risk of other bone fractures by 14-percent.

Drug maker Glaxosmithkline agreed to pay $3 billion to settle criminal and civil claims over some of its medications. It is the largest fraud settlement in US history and the largest payment ever by a drug company.

The Justice Department accused the company of marketing some of its drugs as treatments for conditions for which they weren't approved. It also accused Glaxosmithkline of failing to report safety information concerning its diabetes medication, Avandia.

In a statement, the company's CEO said the company regrets what happened and learned from the mistakes it made.
