Expectant mother killed in collision

LANDIS, N.C. -- A 20-year-old Rowan County woman and her unborn child were killed when her car collided with a driver being followed by police.

Police in Landis say the incident began Tuesday in Kannapolis, where officers noticed a red Jeep moving erratically. Authorities say police officers began following the Jeep, which witnesses say hit several vehicles before striking the car driven by Leanna Newman of Salisbury.

Newman's car overturned several times. She and her unborn child died overnight at Carolinas Medical Center. Police say Newman's 3-year-old daughter was not seriously injured.

Rigo Berto Guillen Martinez is listed in fair condition Wednesday morning.

Investigators have to determine whether alcohol was involved, Martinez's status in the United States; and whether the death was the result of a police chase.
