CHARLOTTE β Demi Moore's recent health emergency is potentially bringing to light increasing dangers of designer drugs.
It's still not known what the Hollywood star smoked that potentially caused her to be rushed to the hospital last Monday night in a semiconscious state.
The Associated Press is using the event to call attention to spice, also known as herbal incense. That was the topic last week at a training seminar for North Carolina health care providers, hoping to educate them on designer drugs, signs someone is using and their dangers.
βIt's important to be aware of what could actually happen if chemicals react with other chemicals. It could cause a lot of problems for the body,β said Jeremiah Hopes, lead treatment specialist at the Stonewall Jackson Youth Development Center .
The National Office of Drug Control Policy says there were twice as many spice-related calls to poison control centers nationwide in 2011 as there were in 2010.
