WILMINGTON -- New Hanover County commissioners unanimously approved a plan Tuesday night to consolidate the county's four volunteer fire departments. The Wilmington Star News is reporting that volunteer firefighters opposed the move saying it would mean closing several departments.
New Hanover County Fire Services will now be the lead agency for fire and rescue in Castle Hayne, Wrightsboro, Myrtle Grove and Federal Point. Officials hope the move will lead to reduced insurance rates for property owners.
