MIDWAY, N.C. -- Talk of a gun ordinance among town leaders had many people in Midway concerned.

"We don't need anymore regulations. This is rural, this is Midway. This is where I've spent all of my 49 years," Midway resident Hal Mcalpine said.

Midway leaders say they never got to the point of writing up an actual gun law proposal. First they wanted to hold a hearing to hear what the public thought.

"I'm just vehemently opposed to any gun law that would obstruct law abiding citizens who are enabled by the present laws to hold those guns. It's wrong," resident Tony Schumaker said.

Part of the conversation about gun laws included making it illegal to fire a gun within 500 feet of a home unless you have permission from the homeowner.

But some worried how they would protect themselves.

"I can see some regulations maybe in a neighborhood but still if I want to go out and shoot a copperhead or something in my backyard I don't want to have to ask my neighbor or have something posted that my neighbor set up I've got his permission or whatever," Barry Richardson said.

"But I want the right to protect myself, my property. Midway is full of coyotes. I don't know if any of you know that or not. We got em everywhere. You got to shoot one every once in a while," another resident said.

Midway town leaders say that after hearing everyone's input it is very unlikely that any changes will be made.

"Well, I would imagine given the participation of the residents that it's not going to go anywhere to have an ordinance for firearms," Mayor George Byrum said after the meeting.

Midway currently operates under Davidson county's gun regulations.
