HALIFAX, N.C. -- The Halifax County sheriff's office is mourning the loss of one of its K-9 officers.
Officials say Cpl. Mike Almendarez went to let out his 8-year-old partner, Dan, a male German Shepard, on Monday and found that he was gone from his kennel. Almendarez searched the area, but had no luck.
A neighbor found Dan dead Tuesday under his carport and brought him to the Roanoke Animal Hospital in Roanoke Rapids.
Dan was certified as an explosive detection K-9 and had been with the sheriff's office for about eight years.
A memorial service is planned for Friday at the Hockaday Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids.
