CAMP LEJEUNE – A Camp Lejeune Marines was honored with the Bronze Star for his heroic actions in Afghanistan.

Major John Moder received the Bronze Star for his actions during an intense battle in May 2008. At the time, Moder was the commanding officer for a unit in Afghanistan.

Marine officials say his actions contributed to the seizure of a fort in that country.

According to the citation issued by the commandant of the Marine Corps, Moder led a group of Marines to victory during a 14-hour attack.

During the seizure of the fort, the statement says Moder remained calm and stayed at the front of his company while under heavy fire.

Officers say Moder was in constant contact with insurgents, staying out front even when Taliban fighters threw grenades and shot rocket-propelled grenades from as close as 20 meters.

The statement says Moder was exposed to insurgent sharpshooters for hours while he controlled his unit.

Moder has been deployed four times since Sept. 11, 2001.

He is currently an officer with the Marine Special Operations School.
