RALEIGH – The investigation continues into the murder of State Board of Education member Kathy Taft.
Taft died Tuesday after she was severely beaten while staying at a friend's home in Raleigh over the weekend.
Wake County District Attorney Colon Willoughby filed a motion to seal 911 calls, incident reports and search warrants related to the investigation. Superior Court Judge Donald Stephens signed the motion, allowing for the documents to be kept from the public and the media for at least 30 days.
Also, Raleigh Police told News 14 Carolina that detectives are now looking at whether an attempted break-in one street over from the Kathy Taft assault has any connection. The owner of a house on Wayland Drive told police Saturday they came home to find someone had tried to break into the house while they were out of town.
Residents who've seen police camped out for five days in their quiet neighborhood now have to wonder if they have reason for concern. Police reports only show a few minor incidents for this area, and those who know the neighborhood say that's because it is a safe place.
"The area is a fantastic neighborhood,” said Raleigh City Council member Bonner Gaylord, who represents the district where the neighborhood is located. “I know the area well, and it's a shocking event to have happened in that neighborhood."
Despite a lack of information from police, Gaylord says he's confident in the job they're doing.
"Residents can rest assured that they're in good hands with the police investigation underway, and the Raleigh Police Department is well equipped to handle this," he said.
The attorney for several media outlets, including News 14 Carolina, plans to file a motion to vacate on Thursday. That could lead to the 911 calls, search warrants and incident reports related to the Kathy Taft investigation being made public record.
