CHARLOTTE – A sophomore at East Mecklenburg High School is recovering in the hospital after being shot in the leg Wednesday afternoon.

Police say the girl was an innocent bystander following a large fight in an off-campus parking lot. Police are still searching for the shooter.

Authorities say during the fight, which broke out around 3 p.m., one person went to a parked car, grabbed a gun and began shooting. One of the bullets hit the teen as students were walking home from school.

While the shooting victim went to East Meck, police say they aren’t sure if the people involved in the fight or the shooter were CMS students.

“We have to identify who the shooters are,” said Capt. Lisa Goelz. “We still don’t know if this was gang-related, what this whole dispute was about, we still have a lot to figure out.”

Police say at least one suspect took off from the scene in a grey Nissan Altima. It’s reported to have tinted windows and damage to right front passenger side. Officers are also following up on a tag number.

The 10th grader is alert and awake in the hospital and is expected to be OK.
