CONCORD, N.C. -- A Texas fugitive arrested in Concord on murder charges is in the Guilford County jail awaiting extradition.
America's Most Wanted host John Walsh was on a talk show Friday discussing fugitive Albert James Turner Jr. Two people in Concord who saw the show, recognized Turner and called police. He was arrested at Carolina Mall.
“We don't know where he was between here and there, but we're just very glad he's in custody now,” said Deputy Chief Guy Smith, of the Concord Police Department.
The Good Samaritans who recognized Turner and eventually turned him in tried to help him get into a shelter last week after spotting him sleeping outside a church. He was turned away because he did not have legal identification.
“The community is our eyes and ears; what they see and what they hear is what helps us in our job,” Smith said.
This time it was a fugitive arrest that brought America's Most Wanted to the city of Concord, but last May it was the unsolved killings at Sundrop that brought the crime fighting TV show to town.
Donna Barnhardt and Darrell Noles were shot to death at the bottling company the morning of June 13, 2008. America's Most Wanted offered its help by profiling the story.
“I thought that if they can catch this guy from Texas, they could maybe do something here,” said Barnhardt’s daughter Rebecca Valentine. “The more we get it out there, the reward, the sketch, the more things will be refreshed in people's memories.”
There is still an $85,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the Sundrop case. Click here for more about the unsolved case.
