Suspect in Texas double murder arrested in Concord
CONCORD – Police say Albert James Turner, the man accused of a double murder in Texas who was arrested inside a Cabarrus County mall, was living the life of a homeless person in Concord before someone recognized him on an America's Most Wanted promotion.
Authorities say the former prison guard was profiled during an America's Most Wanted promotion Friday which was set to air Saturday night. Someone in Concord recognized Turner, called America's Most Wanted and then police.
“They came in and talked to us in person because they really wanted to make sure someone knew they felt like this was the guy who had just been featured on TV,” Sgt. A.T. Rankin, of the Concord Police Department, said. “They knew where he could possibly be, saw him in the area.”
Turner is accused of killing his wife and mother-in-law in Rosenburg, Texas. He had been on the run since late December.
“He was sitting on a bench,” Deputy U.S. Marshal Cameron Welch said. “He was confronted by law enforcement. They took him into custody with no problems.”
Concord police have no idea how long Turner was in the area.
“I haven't had a good night's rest since this happened,” Darren Frank, the suspect's brother-in-law, said. “I have one eye opened and if I would go to sleep, I would try to wake myself up, really feeling something was going to happen.”
Police say if the witness hadn't alerted them, they wouldn't have been able to capture Turner at in Concord. Now he's in custody of U.S. Marshals. He was taken to Greensboro where he could face a federal judge as early as Monday concerning extradition back to Texas.
