SWANSBORO, N.C. – A massive sink hole eight feet wide has blocked about 1,500 people from entering or leaving the Bear Creek neighborhood.
The sink hole is on Shell Rock Landing Road, the only road leading to the 500-home neighborhood. The North Carolina Department of Transportation fixed the hole last week, but heavy rains and a broken water pipe created an even larger sink hole.
The DOT working to correct the new problem and residents are letting them do their job without much of a hassle.
“Everyone's been real nice and understanding. It's just a tough situation, they can't go anywhere,” said Warren Wethington, with the NC DOT.
Both residents and visitors to the area are making the best out of the situation at hand, knowing there is nothing that can be done except wait for the hole to be filled in.
“I guess we're just going to throw out a barbecue and just make the South the South and we'll just have a barbecue and watch them watch the dirt,” said Doc Thompson, Swansboro resident.
