HIGH POINT, N.C. -- Swimming pools and fitness rooms are images that usually come to mind when you think of the YWCA.
But it's more about services than sports at the YWCA of High Point, said Executive Director Heidi Majors.
"We do offer the aquatics and wellness and the fitness areas,” she said. “But the majority of our programs go to the empowerment of women."
One little known program getting a lot of wear these days according to Majors is the Baby Basics Closet.
"Last year the Baby Basics Closet served over 455 individuals," said Majors.
The YWCA works with local agencies and churches to provide emergency supplies like clothes, diapers, shoes, even formula to low-income clients, or those simply down on their luck.
Majors cautioned, "It's not to provide a supply of diapers for individuals. It's for that last minute crisis need."

It's a need Teen Mom Program Coordinator Keonna Hayes sees too often.
"Our teenagers range between the ages of 13 to 18," Hayes said. "They often come to me for different help about ways that they are having problems with their children, whether it's feeding, or walking or crawling."
But Hayes stresses it's not about handouts.
"We are not only just sheltering these girls and letting them have children at a young age but we are steering them in the direction they need to go in order to finish high school or move on to higher education."
The YWCA of High Point is running low on newborn diapers. If you'd like to make a donation, or for more information about the program call the YWCA at (336) 882-4126 or visit YWCAHP.com.
