CHARLOTTE -- Police have made an arrest in connection with the first homicide of the new year.
The incident began around 6 a.m. Tuesday at the Hillcrest apartments in east Charlotte, where police found a man fatally shot in the parking lot. He was identified as 53-year-old Geral Poage.
After searching the property, police were unable to locate the suspect, 29-year-old Iaian McClellan.
The suspect was arrested at the Southgate apartments in south Charlotte.
About three hours later, officers were called to the Southgate apartment complex on Conway Avenue in south Charlotte after learning McClellan had been transported there.
McClellan did fire at officers but no one was hurt. He then surrendered on his own.
Police say this is unfortunate way to start the year.
“Obviously it’s not the way we wanted to start out the year,” said Officer Robert Fey. “The one good thing about this is that we have a suspect in custody.
The names of the victim and the suspect have not yet been released. Police say the suspect may recently have been released from jail.
McClellan is in the Mecklenburg County jail.
