WARRENTON, N.C. -- Warren County sheriff's deputies are searching for three suspects in connection with the fatal shooting of a convenience store clerk.

The incident happened around 9 p.m. Friday at Pa-Pa's Country Store and Grill on Highway 401 in the southern part of the county. Surveillance video shows three armed men entering the store and 41-year-old Randy Terrell's last moments before he was shot and killed behind the counter.

"He didn't deserve what he got,” Terrell's niece, Dina Davis, said. “He tried to get his life back right and provide for his family. He left behind two daughters and a son."

Warren County Sheriff Johnny Williams says the department is still looking at the tape but they do have an idea about a suspect description.

“We're looking for three males, which appear to be black males, and right now we are making some progress,” he said. “We're back out here to do a follow-up investigation and we're going to go from there."

Davis says Terrell worked part-time at the convenience store for the last six months. He was a truck driver by trade and was filling in for another employee as a favor.

"The girl who was supposed to have been working wanted to go to the beach and kept asking off, so Pa-Pa called Randy and asked him if he would cover,” she said. “That's the type of person Randy was. He was a simple country boy. "

In this rural part of the county, there's not a lot of excitement and crimes like this happen few and far between.

"It's been a while since we had a convenience store clerk to get killed,” Williams said. “I've been sheriff for 12 years and I don't think that we've had one since I've been sheriff."

Terrell was born and grew up in the same town, just seven miles from the store.

"My main concern is I hope (the suspects were) nobody that we knew,” Davis said. “Randy didn't have enemies, but I just hope it was nobody that we knew or that Randy knew. That would hurt the worst."

Williams says the evidence that they've collected leads him to believe that the suspects were people close by. He is asking for the public’s help in solving this crime. Anyone with information is asked to call him at (252) 257-3364.
