CHARLOTTE – Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are getting about $5.3 million to help cover the department's costs leading up to and during the Democratic National Convention.

The money is part of $50 million in federal funding approved for security during the convention. The most expensive item listed is insurance, both liability and worker's compensation. Combined, the policies will cost almost $2 million.

CMPD officials say they don't have enough space at their headquarters so they're upfitting the command center in uptown, which will cost $704,000.

There is also money for X-ray machines, updates to the helicopter, several SUVs that the report says will be used to move officers to problem areas, new bikes and motorcycles.
