TAMPA, Fla.--With the threat of heavy rain and possible hurricane, Republican National Convention organizers and local officials decided it was best to scrap the first day of the convention until Isaac moves from the Tampa Bay area.

The biggest reason officials canceled Monday's RNC activities was protecting thousands of delegates and media members.

Many are staying in nearby St. Petersburg and Clearwater and the threat of Isaac meant a handful of major bridges could be shut down Monday.

The move means Monday speakers, including South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley will need to be condensed into the Tuesday to Thursday program at the RNC.

Presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney tweeted a message in support of the move, while convention organizers could move Republican delegates in beachfront hotels if flooding and storm surges become an issue.

While the Monday of the Republican National Convention is canceled, the kickoff event at Tropicana Field in nearby St. Petersburg will still be proceeding.

Organizers of the Coalition to March on the RNC still plan to have their protest Monday morning.
