Reporter David Kernodle
David Kernodle is proud to say he is a North Carolinian through and through. He was born and raised in the small foothills town of Rutherfordton, N.C., or Rufftown as it’s known to locals.
David went to high school at R.S Central and then attended Isothermal Community College. It was there that he got the broadcasting bug. David says Isothermal's Mass Communication department is full of outstanding people that helped shape his career.
David left ICC and transferred to the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. GO BRAVES! Like ICC, the staff at UNC Pembroke was very supportive and gave him opportunities to grow as a person and as a future professional.
Just before graduating from Pembroke, David went to work for the Florence, S.C., CBS affiliate WBTW. He co-reported in the station’s Robeson County bureau and worked alongside his mentor and friend, Tasha Oxendine. Her experience and knowledge proved to be the most valued part of his education despite the fact that David's stint at WBTW was short, just over a year.
David moved on to News 14 Carolina, working as a photographer/reporter in the Fayetteville bureau. Life in Fayetteville was eventful to say the least. The job gave him the opportunity to cover presidents, hurricanes, crime and interesting people.
David left the Fayetteville office for the Charlotte newsroom in March 2007. So far, he says it has been a great move. He describes his coworkers as professional and kind, and the move also allowed him to move closer to home, Rufftown.
David's wife, Hailey, and dog, Oliver, are still adjusting to the clay but are happy to be tucked away in Charlotte. When he is not working, he typically enjoys cycling and has become an avid disc golfer. Remember to SHARE THE ROAD. His family enjoys hiking the trails and paddling the waterways in the area.
David says he can’t wait to cover the many stories here in Charlotte and get to know many of you.
