FORT BRAGG — Army sergeant Adam Holcomb will serve 30 days in a military correctional institute and be demoted after he was found guilty on two of four charges related to the death of fellow soldier Pvt. Danny Chen.

A jury on Fort Bragg handed down the sentence Tuesday morning. Holcomb will also be demoted to the rank of Specialist. Monday, Holcomb was found not guilty of negligent homicide and hazing, but guilty of maltreatment and assault on Pvt. Danny Chen. Prosecutors said Chen shot himself in Afghanistan last year after weeks of emotional and physical abuse.
Members of the Organization of Chinese Americans were outraged by the verdict and had been calling for a harsh sentence.

In closing sentencing arguments Tuesday, Chen’s attorneys pleaded that the jurors, “give an answer to the man who was not caring for Danny Chen”.

Holcomb's family meanwhile said they are relieved by the verdict.

“Again, justice was served. He did say that he was wrong. But it's combat. I've never been to it and we don't know what happens. We are glad that he gets to stay in the Military because that was his biggest thing he loves to serve,” said defendant's brother Patrick Holcomb.

Holcomb stated on Monday that he regretted his actions. It has not been released where Holcomb will serve his time in prison.
