RALEIGH – Former Congressman Bob Etheridge is throwing his name into the ring for governor.

Currently, Etheridge serves as a special advisor to coordinate state recovery efforts for businesses, local governments, farmers and schools.

The other two Democrats running are current Lt. Gov Walter Dalton, and Orange County state representative Bill Faison.

Etheridge said at a press conference on Friday that his life's work has been about public education.

“I really believe that the 21st Century is going to belong to the educated and the future of this state is tied to the very premise," Etheridge said.

Some political analysts said, things don't look good for the Democrats right now.

"Bob Etheridge did win a statewide race but to most North Carolinians that's ancient history. That was a long time ago. He's been in Congress, now he's out of Congress so he doesn't have that sort of national statewide platform to launch a campaign from,” David McLennan, Peace College political science professor.

Others believe that at 70-years-old, Etheridge's age may be a disadvantage.

"Politics is not a game for the youngest of people but it's certainly a tough job running and then being governor,” said Andrew Taylor, N.C. State political science professor.

But Etheridge said age is nothing but a number because he said he believes he will be a strong leader, which he said North Carolina needs.

"It's not about slogans or tags it's about providing leadership for the state,” he said.

Political experts said more candidates may join the race. If they do, they'll need to make an announcement soon.
