DAVIDSON, N.C. —Children in the north Davidson part of town will soon have a new playground thanks to an event sponsored by the YMCA of greater Charlotte, Foresters and KaBOOM!.
The Johnston YMCA currently is without a playground, but that will change by 3 p.m. Saturday. The project is a one-day build, and is one out of 150 across the United States hosted by KaBOOM! as they battle what they call a "play deficit." The organization is trying to get playgrounds within walking distance of children, giving them a safe and fun place to go play.
The event is expected to bring out more than 200 volunteers to assemble the playground, which is based on designs that kids created at a design day event held in August.
Volunteers with the organization say playgrounds are an important part of a community.
“Children spend a lot of time in front of their TVs and away from family. KaBOOM! is really trying to fight to get them back outside and playing for their physical well-being and their social and emotional well-being as well,” said KaBOOM! project manager Danielle Trezek.
Saturday's ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 3 p.m. The new playground will serve about 25,000 kids and families in the area every year.
