FORT MILL, S.C. — Renovatus Church has a new building but the same message.
True to its name, the church not only seeks to renovate or transform all who come, but also the various spaces they have occupied which included a movie theater in the now defunct Eastland Mall.
"We were at Eastland long after it was known as a Charlotte monument and more almost as a monument to our failures as a city," said Pastor Jonathan Martin.
It is a theme in their ministry, giving people and spaces new purpose. So it's fitting that the congregation celebrates their fifth anniversary in their new location. The building used to be the home of the PTL Club, started by televangelists Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker.
The PTL club, which stood for “Praise the Lord”, was a very popular program from 1974 to 1987. It ended after Jim Bakker was sent to prison for fraud after a sex scandal. Today the building still looks very similar to how it did more than 20 years ago.
"It feels absolutely surreal," said Pastor Martin. "Amanda and I were back in the greenroom earlier and just looked at each other thinking about the fact that, wow this is where Jim and Tammy got ready for the show."
Starting on March 5, Renovatus will begin having its weekly Saturday night service at its Fort Mill location. They will begin renting the space from the owner of the facility, The Broadcast Group.
Sunday services will continue at its facility on Little Rock road in Charlotte.
