CHARLOTTE – A day after a Pizza Hut employee shot and killed two would-be robbers, the spotlight is on the right to carry a concealed weapon.

Investigators say a deliveryman in East Charlotte shot and killed two armed men who were beating him and robbing the restaurant. That employee has a conceal-carry permit and is also a former Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Deputy.

Sheriff Chipp Bailey says permits are up 11 percent in the last year but they come with a responsibility.

"The only time that you draw that gun and point it at somebody is when you know in your mind that you are within your rights to take a life," said Bailey.

A Pizza Hut spokesperson wouldn't say whether employees are allowed to be armed. The Employers Association says that's common policy in Mecklenburg County where 80 percent of businesses prohibit weapons.

Police say 21-year-olds Gregory James Hardy and Dauntrae Wallace were the two suspects killed in the Pizza Hut shooting.

A third suspect is still on the loose.
