CONCORD -- The American flags in downtown Concord will probably stay up beyond Labor Day celebrations to honor 22-year-old James McClamrock, a local soldier killed Tuesday in Iraq.

Flowers adorned the sign at Concord ARP Church, where his father, Mark, is the pastor. The church along Union Street was relatively quiet Wednesday but word spread quickly throughout the city.

“We're all affected by the war and this obviously brings it home,” said Mayor Scott Padgett.

Three of the soldier's younger siblings said they talked to their brother through Skype and Facebook and they looked forward to his return from duty in January.

McClamrock's parents and widow left Wednesday for Dover to recover his body and begin to prepare for their hero's homecoming.

The church did have a prayer meeting set for Thursday night and one deacon said there's no better time to meet for it. Church members preferred not to do interviews until the McClamrocks were ready to talk themselves.
