CHARLOTTE -- A slow start in attendance numbers for the NASCAR Hall of Fame. The hall announced it surpassed the 100,000 visitor mark this past weekend, three months after it opened in uptown.

The year to date total is 102,731 visitors. At this pace, the hall would finish its first year with attendance around 400,000, half of the 800,000 visitors that Hall of Fame executives predicted initially and still far short of the visitors authority's adjusted number of 575,000.

"It's far too soon to say there's any kind of alarms you need to worry about," said Winston Kelley, the executive director for the Hall of Fame.

Even reaching the 400,000 mark might be difficult, since the first quarter included the grand opening, the first induction classes, two races at the speedway and the summer months.

The demographics, though, are encouraging.

The hall has had visitors from all 50 states and about 70 percent of customers are from 100 miles or more away from Charlotte. More than 26 percent of customers are from more than 500 miles away.

Empty-nesters and retirees make up the largest percentage of visitors at 27 percent, but older families with teenagers are right behind at 25 percent. The young adult age group from 18 to 24 had the lowest appeal making up just seven percent of visitors.

"When I look all in we're very pleased with the product, the feedback," said Kelley. "We just need to continue to build on that."
