SUMMERFIELD, N.C. - For years, students and staff at Summerfield Elementary have dealt with overcrowding and dilapidated buildings.
By August 2011 many of those problems should be solved. Wednesday Guilford County School officials broke ground on a more than $12 million renovation project at the elementary school. The school is in need of a new media center as well as a new cafeteria—the later of which currently serves as a classroom.
Construction crews went to work right away after the project was approved a few weeks ago.
"[There is] quite a bit to get done. Several new buildings to build, some renovations to the existing building. They'll get a new dining area, a new kitchen, a new media center. Approximately 16 new classrooms," said Andy LaRowe with Guilford County Schools.
Principal Jill Walsh said she is excited to see the finished product next fall.
"It'll be interesting for sure during the next year but our staff is very well prepared. Our parents are informed about what's going on. Our top priority is the safety of our kids over the upcoming school year," said Walsh "I'm sure there will be some growing pains along the way but we'll keep in the end product in sight."
The project is covered by a 2008 bond.
