HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. -- North Carolina Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton helped chair a golf tournament at Huntersville's Skybrook Golf Club on Saturday. The second annual Gray Classic golf tournament has the mission of supporting youth mentoring.

It's part of a weekend of events put on by 100 Black Men of Charlotte. But proceeds from Saturday's golf tournament go directly to the organization's Movement of Youth program.
That initiative provides mentors and role models in an effort to encourage young men to stay in school, do their best academically and pursue post secondary education.

"We're in such a crisis with our young black men, and today is one of the things we're going to do to solve that," said Brian Willis, the president of 100 Black Men of Charlotte.

Dalton said the importance of having a mentor is immeasurable.

"These kids are being mentored, are looking for hope and opportunity," he said. "When you have a mentor that's a role model, that's someone who's interested in that young man or young woman."

Partnering with the private sector to support mentoring, internships and job shadowing is something representatives say is important to the lieutenant governor.

With 36 foursomes, the tournament raised money through registration fees, as well as a silent auction featuring different coveted items like sports memorabilia.
