GREENSBORO—Most kids across the state are enjoying their summer break by vacationing with their families or away at camp—but some students are actually hitting the books.

The Rainbow Intersection kicked off its first science enrichment camp at the New Millennium Christian Center this week. The month-long program is designed to recruit more young people into STEM, or science, technology, engineering and math. In addition to science, students spend part of the morning working on language arts and learning skills like organization and time management.

Dr. John Kelly, Chair of the Electrical Engineering Department at NC A&T, says that instructors are able to engage students by working their minds as well as their senses.

"Students who get turned on to school, to math, to science, to engineering at this age stay connected and so we have to get them here," said Kelly.

The Rainbow Intersection will also host an after-school enrichment program starting this Fall for kids ages 8 to 13.
