MADISON, N.C. – Madison police called in help from the Greensboro Bomb Squad Monday after a Goodwill employee found a grenade in a donation box.

The grenade was wrapped up in clothing.

"I started looking at the numbers and it said R5 or something and she said, 'I think that means explosives or something.' I said, 'Well we need to follow protocol.' She said, 'Call the police?' And I said 'Yes ma'am,'" Cathy Lamb, Goodwill district manager, said.

Once Madison police got the device out of the store, they called in reinforcements from the Greensboro Bomb Squad.

"To get it removed from there without attracting a lot of attention and a lot of chaos, people running and screaming, 'There's a hand grenade,' or whatever. I think the officers did a great job there, getting it out, getting it to the police department and getting it secured and of course having to depend on Greensboro, we thank them for coming over and now they're going to dispose of it for us," Madison Police Chief Perry Webster said.

And while the staff at Goodwill appreciates donations, they say weapons shouldn't be included.

"Please keep your guns and your ammunition at home or call the local police, the local authorities will be glad to dispose of it," Lamb said.
