CHARLOTTE -- Advocates against gun violence are also in Charlotte, offering an alternative view to the NRA.

Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence, a non-profit organization working to reduce gun violence in America, held a news conference Friday.

"Too many people in the NRA leadership are becoming increasingly out of touch with not only the American public, but their own membership," said Helmke.

He also said the NRA's biggest argument has to do with the Second Amendment, and the right to bare arms. But he said that's not what his group stands against.

"We're not anti gun, we're not out to destroy all guns,” said Helmke. “But we want some common sense here. We want people to realize there is too much gun violence in this country. There are things we can do about it.'

Helmke said a recent poll by the Brady Center shows more people oppose allowing guns to be carried in public and 57 percent of those polled feel less safe knowing people can carry concealed guns in public.

"Guns in our school, youth losing their lives on the streets and the playgrounds,” said Roxane Kolar of North Carolinians Against Gun Violence. “All the gun violence, it's preventable and it can be stopped."

Some people with North Carolinians Against Gun Violence plan to rally outside of the Convention Center Saturday.
