GREENSBORO – Around the campus of N.C. A&T State University, Dennis Hayle is still remembered fondly.
"He was like a good guy around campus. He did a lot on campus, a lot of community service and he was just an all around good person," Javon Skinner, Hayle's fraternity brother, said.
On the anniversary of his murder Monday, his fellow fraternity brothers and friends gathered to remember the 22-year-old.
"Today, we just want his memory to stay alive. We just want to have something to remember him, to let the campus know that he's gone but never forgotten," Skinner said.
Monday, more than 100 students marched on campus in memory of Hayle. Students say they hope their presence will bring peace on campus.
"Violence is killing our community, it is really tearing us apart and in order to rebuild our community, we have to start speaking up. We have to start saying what happened and having responsibility for our actions," Andrea Gentry, an N.C. A&T student, said.
Hayle's murder is unsolved, but his friends hope that today's march will encourage anyone with information to come forward.
"You have people who want to know what happened, who want to know the full story. We want to be able to have that sigh of relief, saying, ‘Finally, we have some actual closure,’" Gentry said.
"By speaking up, if anyone knows anything concerning the situation, speaking up, you could be saving someone else's life," student Candyce Thompson said.
Anyone with information about the murder of Dennis Hayle should call Greensboro Crime Stoppers at (336)373-1000.
