RALEIGH – North Carolinians are opening up their hearts and wallets to help those in need after the earthquake in Haiti. Some charities are turning to technology to help raise funds. But there could be danger from scammers as well.

Cell phone users can donate $10 to the American Red Cross by sending the word “Haiti” in a text message to 90999. They can also sent the word “HAITI” in a text message to 864833 to donate $5 to the United Way.

Scam complaints can be made to the Secretary of State's Charitable Solicitation Licensing Division at 1-800-830-4989 or to the Attorney General's Office at 1-877-5-NO-SCAM.
