RALEIGH -- The White House and Time Warner Cable are joining forces to push the country to the top of the heap in math and science education.

President Barack Obama launched a campaign called Educate to Innovate during a news conference Monday morning. Efforts will be focused on inspiring children’s participation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics -- the so-called STEM subjects.

Business leaders, foundations, nonprofits and science and engineering societies -- including Time Warner Cable -- are investing in the charge by providing students opportunities outside the classroom to engage in learning activities involving everything from science on Sesame Street to video games, Web sites and advertisements.

"Business leaders from Intel, Xerox, Kodak and Time Warner Cable are teaming up with Sally Ride and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as well as the Carnegie Corporation to find and replicate successful science, math and technology programs all across America," Obama said.

Time Warner Cable’s Connect a Million Minds initiative kicked off last week in Charlotte and Wilmington and will launch early next year in Raleigh and Greensboro.
