A new injectable drug is promising to erase wrinkles better than Botox.

Dysport was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in April and is now available in North Carolina. It's made from the same active ingredient as Botox – botulinum toxin type A – and is administered via injection at the site of forehead wrinkles.

Despite recent FDA warnings that these products could spread beyond the injection site and lead to botulism poisoning, nearly 2.5 million Americans had Botox injections in 2008 for cosmetic reasons. The drugs temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles by restricting the muscle actions that cause creasing and frown lines.

Some doctors say Dysport works faster, lasts longer and is cheaper.

"The advantage would be that it lasts longer," Dr. Donald Sudy said. "Four or five months compared to three."

It also might work in people for whom Botox has stopped working, because of built-up antibodies.

"There have been a lot of studies with good results – over 2,900 participants," Sudy said. "That's how it was FDA approved."

There are possible side effects though, including nose and throat irritation, headache pain, skin reaction at the injection site and eyelid swelling or drooping.

But for people like Denise Pelone, who came to Sudy for Dysport injections, the benefits outweigh the risks.

"I like that smooth look," she said.
