Varicose veins affect more than 25 million Americans. Women and senior are affected most by the painful problem.

Healthy leg veins contain valves that open and close to assist the return of blood back to the heart. Venous reflux disease develops when the valves that keep the blood flowing out of the legs and back to the heart become damaged or diseased.

As a result, it can lead to symptoms of varicose veins, including pain, swollen legs, restless legs and skin changes or ulcers.

Dr. Donald Sudy of Evolve Medical Associates in Charlotte uses a technique called the VNSU closure procedure to treat the problem using ultrasound.

A catheter is positioned into the diseased vein through a tine opening in the skin. Heat is delivered into the vein wall. It shrinks and the vein is sealed closed, allowing for blood to be rerouted to healthy veins.

For patients, the ease of the procedure and quick recovery time is important.

Following the procedure, a simple bandage is placed over the insertion site. Patients typically return to normal activities within a day.
