CLEVELAND, N.C. – Cleveland Elementary School in western Rowan County is about to welcome its 83rd class of students.

But third graders are going to be getting anything but a typically rural community education.

"This is a 21st century classroom," teacher Joy Jenkins said. "We're taking care of business."

By providing the most technologically advanced classroom in the state, each student gets to use an iPod.

"There are cursive lessons, so children can watch it and repeat it as many times as necessary," Jenkins said.

Free response tools will add to participation.

"Kids can text what they want to say," Jenkins said.

Digital cameras will record math problems.

"At the end of the year, each student will have created their own personalized digitalized textbook," Jenkins said.

Macbooks will also replace textbooks.

"We generally don't use textbooks because we're bringing everything to life," Jenkins said.

The reigning teacher of the year can hardly hide her enthusiasm for this high-tech classroom.

"It has revolutionized, changed and transformed my life," Jenkins said. "It has really given me areas where I can create and be creative."

Joy Jenkins uses the technology and her creativity to help inspire her students to learn. She said all classrooms need to make the 21st-century transformation.

"We cannot bury our heads in the sand anymore and say you don't need technology in school," Jenkins said.

Jenkins said she hopes her classroom becomes the model for a technological revolution in schools.
