GREENSBORO – Seven-year-old Everett Rhymer got a stuffed Jack Russell terrier after his dog was killed last fall.
"Her name was Jackie and we came home one day and she was out in the neighbor's yard. Unfortunately she had been shot," Everett's mother, Rebecca Rhymer said.
It's been difficult for the family to cope with the loss, but on Sunday, they surprised Everett with a new puppy for his birthday.
The pups are just a few of the dozens of dogs that were in need of homes earlier this week.
The owner of the dogs, a former dog breeder, was forced to give them up after her husband had a stroke.
But Robin Manley, with the group Finding Great Homes for Jack Russells, said they heard from people from all over North Carolina who wanted to adopt the dogs.
"We received over 200 adoption applications for our Jack Russells. By Tuesday afternoon at one o'clock, all 42 dogs had found a permanent home. In fact, I wish we had another 40 or 50 dogs because we would have found homes for them as well," Manley said.
For Everett, giving a home to a Jack Russell is a great birthday present.
"You know what, the joy that I can see in his eyes, he's just so happy now. And hopefully this can replace what happened. There's nothing can change it, but it'll get better," his father, Marty Rhymer, said.
