CHARLOTTE – Officials cut the ribbon Wednesday on a first-of-its-kind housing complex for people with developmental disabilities.

It's called a "five-plex" because it features five one-bedroom apartments. The complex also features a laundry room and a common area for socializing.

"A lot of our folks work part-time, if that, so they cannot afford the rent in Charlotte in safe neighborhoods. They are vulnerable population, so we have to be sure they're safe," Lori Gougeon, executive director of Residential and Support Serivces Inc., said. "But they're still citizens of the Charlotte community, they pay taxes. So, to have a nice place to live is just really important to them."

Residential and support services and the Arc of North Carolina worked together on the housing project and received funding from Housing and Urban Development and the City of Charlotte.
