SOUTHPORT, N.C. -- Food lovers enjoyed themselves as five restaurants showcased their specialties at the Taste of Southport event this weekend.
The chef's dished up a five-course tasting for the coastal residents, with every chef taking a different course.
"One is serving a soup, one an appetizer, one a salad, one an entrée and one a desert," explained Peggy McDonald, event coordinator.
All the ingredients it takes to make the food come with an extra cost this year because of the economy. Some chefs said the cost is worth the price for good food; others are making food work by switching ingredients up a bit.
"Instead of raising prices -- which would hurt our business right now -- we're trying to get more creative with things that we are doing with different specials or different entrée we're doing. A little more homestyle that people I think are looking for. A little lower food costs but still great food," said Patrick Kelly of Fishy Fishy café.
But one chef said dessert is not a place to cut corners.
"Because of the ingredients, there are sometimes when you just have to do the best," said Kelli Menna of Pharmacy Restaurant.
Chef's said events like the Taste of Southport help bring in more business.
"We have over 200 people coming to this event today. I am really pleased with the outcome as a restaurant being able to get our name and our food out to 200 people. These events are great to do that," said Kelly.
This is the second Taste of Southport event. Organizers said they hope to make it annual.
It was $25 to attend the event, with all the money benefiting cultural and historical preservation in Southport
