WILMINGTON -- A small plane ran out of fuel and made a controlled emergency landing at Wilmington International Airport on Sunday morning, landing on the plane's belly and sliding off the runway.
The plane was flying in from the Dominican Republic and there were seven people on board. No injuries were reported.
Airport operations director Gary Broughton says the plane's pilot could not get the landing gear down and he “bellied it in,” hitting the runway and skidding off into the airport's grass.
The plane was a small Cessna and the pilot was stopping at ILM to go through customs on his way to Teterboro, New Jersey.
Broughton says he does not think it will delay other air traffic at the airport.
The four family members on board the plane and the family's nanny are from New York and boarded a commercial plane up to New York later in the morning.
