GREENSBORO -- Headquartered in Greensboro, Southern Foods, a family-owned food distribution company, has been sold to a group of food executives.
"This acquisition is a growth acquisition with Southern Foods and several other components of their business and we look forward to expanding those components," executive Trey Pounders said. He is currently the president of Georgia-based Service Foods.
Part of that expansion includes adding up to 300 jobs to its operation; 80 percent of those employees would report to work in Greensboro.
It will also look to expand into other markets.
“Right now the company does business in Virginia, North and South Carolina and Georgia and we'll plan to expand the existing footprint which they're in with further expansion north and into Florida," said Pounders.
Southern Foods was founded in 1954 by Vic Nussbaum Jr. who went on to serve as Greensboro's mayor from 1987 to 1993.
“The company has a 54-year history here of very successful growth and we hope to continue that,” said COO Neal Anderson.
In continuing their legacy of service to the community, News 14 Carolina has confirmed that the Nussbaum family donated a ”sizeable amount" of company stock proceeds to the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro. The family would not comment however on the amount of the donation.
The sale is expected to close Sept. 12.
