Youth group returns from flood relief
While the group from Westover went to help others, they also got something out of it themselves.
GREENSBORO – While there are many photos circulating of the recent flooding in the Midwest, some images of Findlay, Ohio have hit especially hard.
"The town was just devastated, and that stuck with us," said John Freeman, the high school pastor at Westover Church in Greensboro. The church plans a service project for teens every year. This year they made Findlay their destination, and 180 students plus 25 adults went on the trip. P.J. Harvey, 17, was among them.
"When we got there, it was a little overwhelming to see all the work we needed to do," said Harvey. But the group quickly got to work. The town had made some recovery but life wasn't back to normal.
"Apparently a lot of folks ran out of money, they could repair, but they couldn't make it look nice," said Freeman, so members of the Greensboro church set to painting, roofing, and pretty much doing anything to help out residents.

"They were very distressed about everything -- they had financial problems, they had emotional problems," said Jordan Mahaffey, another high school senior on the trip. "They were just thankful for anyone who could bring a smile to their face."
While the group from Westover went to help others, they also got something out of it themselves.
The trip was worth it, "to see them smile again, and see their lives, it's not that bad, and they can get through a flood," said Harvey.
"To simply serve, with no agenda, especially a community that's had such a tough year, was so rewarding," added Freeman.
And there are immediate rewards.
"Some of them would come and give you hugs, some would smile and wave, and start talking to you, they were really happy we were there," said Mahaffey.
And they're looking forward to next year's project.
